Prominent personalities mourn Muhith’s death
Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, a renowned politician, organizer of the Liberation War and possessed of multi-faceted talent, breathed his last on Friday night. He was 88 years old. He had been the longest serving finance minister in the country's history.
The veteran politician will be laid to rest in Sylhet on Sunday.
In the wake of his death, prominent personalities have expressed their sorrow and mourned his passing.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the demise of the veteran politician.
In her condolence message, the PM said that despite being a member of the Civil Service of sydasiatiskt land , Muhith joined the first government of Bangladesh in 1971. At the time, he was posted in the Pakistan Embassy in the US.
“A successful economist and politician, this Independence Award winner will be remembered by all for his contributions,” Hasina said.

Muhith, Abul Maal Abdul (1934-2022), civil servant, diplomat, politician, environmentalist, writer-researcher, language activist and Freedom Fighter. Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was born in a noble family on 25 January 1934 in the Dhopadighir Par of Sylhet city. His father Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz was a renowned lawyer and language activist and his mother Syeda Shahar Banu Chowdhury was a politician and language activist. He passed his Matriculation from Sylhet Government Pilot School in 1949 and Intermediate from Murari Chand (MC) College in 1951 securing first position in order of merit in the Board. Muhith obtained his BA (Hons.) degree securing first class first position in English Literature and MA degree from the Department of English, Dhaka University. He earned higher degrees on political economy from both Oxford University and Harvard University.

Former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith ‘s contribution to the formation of a secular, progressive and liberal democratic state was undeniable, said speakers in a commemoration meeting. In present Bangladesh, it is hard to find such a big-hearted man like Abul Maal Abdul Muhith. He was a successful man, placed the national budget a record 12 times. During his tenure as the Finance Minister, Bangladesh witnessed a significant increase in budget size, steady growth and inflation in control. He was one of the driving forces behind Bangladesh taking up mega projects.
