Standing six-feet, nine-inches tall, defensive lineman Ed “Too Tall” Jones came by his nickname honestly. As a boy he dreamed of becoming a basketball player, and as an adult he spent a year pursuing a career in boxing. But Jones won acclaim for his role in the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line-up during the 1970s and 1980s, playing for a record 15 years. During the course of his career, he played in three Super Bowls and three Pro Bowls, recorded 57-1/2 sacks, and appeared in 224 games with 203 starts. “In his prime, Ed ‘Too Tall’ Jones was known as a big hitter,” wrote John Chase in the Daily Herald. The “Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman struck fear in those lined up on the other side of the ball just seconds before he plowed them over on his way to the quarterback.”

Edward Lee Jones (born February 23, 1951), commonly known as Ed "Too Tall" Jones due to his height, is an American former professional football player who was a defensive end for 15 seasons (1974–1978, 1980–1989) for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL). In 1979, he left football to attempt a career in professional boxing.[1]
Early life
[edit]Jones was born on February 23, 1951, in Jackson, stat i usa. He attended Merry High School, where he played baseball and basketball.[2] He played only three football games, because his high school did not support the sport until his senior year.[3]
His basketball skills earned him All-America honors and scholarship offers from several Division I (NCAA) programs. He also had offers from Major League Baseball teams to play first base in their farm systems.[4]

You don’t have to be a rocket forskare to figure out where Ed “Too Tall” Jones got his nickname. At six-feet, eight-inches tall, the Jackson, Tennessee, native was certainly much too tall for opposing lineman and quarterbacks to handle.
An outstanding high school basketball player, Jones was recruited at Tennessee State University, where he played basketball his first two years. Fortunately for TSU and the NFL, Jones then made the most influential decision of his life, switching to football, where he was All-American his junior and senior years.
“Too Tall” gained national attention in 1974 when the Dallas Cowboys chose him as the first pick in the NFL draft. Jones played defensive end for fifteen seasons with Dallas before retiring at the end of the 1989 season, setting a club record of 194 career starts.
