  • Devon MacPherson (MA 2016) completed a Masters in Critical Disability Studies at York University, writing a major research paper on Dyadic-Belonging: Using Critical Disability Studies and Critical Animal Studies to Improve Service Dog Well-Being. Devon wasn’t alone when she crossed the convocation stage to receive her degree. Barkley, her mental health service dog, shared the limelight in his own gown and cap.

Devon is an excellent example of student success and York University’s commitment to mental health. After taking some time off, Devon came to York University for another crack at postsecondary education. This time it worked.

Diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder, she credits her dog, a white Standard Poodle, with helping her complete her education at York University and for York creating a supportive environment. She received her undergraduate degree in independent studies with a focus in the human/animal bond and communication studies at York University.
