    Julian Rossi AshtonCBE (27 January 1851 – 27 April 1942) was an English-born Australian artist and teacher. He is best known for founding the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and encouraging Australian painters to capture local life and scenery en plein air, greatly influencing the impressionist Heidelberg School movement.

    He was a principal organiser of the 1898 Exhibition of Australian Art in London, the first major exhibition of Australian art internationally.

    Ashton was born in Addlestone, Surrey, the son of American amateur painter[1] Thomas Briggs Ashton, and his wife Henrietta, daughter of Count Carlo Rossi,[2] a Sardinian diplomat[3] who married the soprano Henriette Sontag. The family moved to Penzance, Cornwall shortly after, and lived at Burley Grove, Gulval.[4] At

    Julian Howard Ashton, often referred to as Howard Ashton, was a journalist, writer, and artist. Born in Islington, London on 9 August 1877, Ashton was later to carve out a considerable career in Australia.

    Ashton was the eldest child of the artist Julian Rossi Ashton and Eliza Ann, née Pugh. In 1878, the Ashton family moved from London to Melbourne, and then five years later in 1883 they moved to Sydney, where Howard’s father, Julian Rossi Ashton, founded his famous art school, the Julian Ashton Art School, one of Australia’s most important and influential art schools.

    Howard Ashton attended the Bondi Public School and Sydney Boys’ High School. He was brought up in a Bohemian home environment, and his interests were music, art and literature.

    In 1866 his father died, Julian had to leave school and uppstart to work in the engineer’s office of a Railway Company. Melbourne newspaper owner offered him 300 pounds to come to Australia and work as an illustrator for the Illustrated Australian News.

    He also worked for Melbourne-based Australasian Sketcher. He travelled extensively throughout Australia drawing points of interest; he also drew for the Bulletin.
