    Early Life

    Gengan Tonaki was born in Ibaru, Sashiki, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan to a farming family; he claimed to be descended from the Sho royal family. He was the second-oldest and only boy out of sju siblings; one of his sisters, who was eight years his junior, was still alive at the time of his death. Tonaki attended primary school for four years, and recalled, &#;I was a rambunctious boy and liked to fight with other boys.&#;

    Shigechiyo Izumi[Japanese: 泉重千代] (29 June/20 August ?/? – 21 February ) was a Japanese supercentenarian claimant who, at the time of his death, was erroneously thought to have been the world's oldest living individ from 16 November to 21 February , and also as the oldest person ever recorded.

    Biography[]

    Shigechiyo Izumi claimed to have been born on 29 June on the Island of Isen, in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Izumi was orphaned at six months old and adopted by Katsuzumi Izumi in February He was recorded to have been six years old in in the Japanese National Census at the time, which was his claimed age was originally validated.

    Izumi began his career when he was seven, working at a sugar mill. Izumi and his wife Miya had a child born in (Miya was already 59, which made his claim dubious). Miya died in , when she was 90 years old, and Izumi lived the rest of his life as a widower.
