Who was Smith Wigglesworth?

Smith Wigglesworth (—) was a British preacher who was influential in the early Pentecostal movement. Wigglesworth, along with Charles Parhamin the U.S., was one of the first preachers to espouse and practice the teachings of Pentecostalism, particularly faith healing and the gift of tongues as evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Fans of Wigglesworth call him the “Apostle of Faith.”
Smith Wigglesworth grew up poor and was unable to gain an education because, from a young age, he needed to work to help support his family. After he married, his wife taught him to read using the Bible. Remarkably, the Bible was the only book Wigglesworth ever read, and he did not permit other reading materials in his home—not even a newspaper!

Smith Wigglesworth was an evangelist who was drawn to the Light of Jesus Christ ever since he was a boy. Born in , the year of his birth saw the Dickensian character ‘Oliver Twist’ at the heights of popularity in England. Smith was born into abject poverty but, unlike Oliver Twist, he had a caring mother and father and a Christian grandmother who moulded his mind and spirit. Though his parents were unsaved Smith respected and obeyed them. His grandmother, a Wesleyan, encouraged him to serve God. One day in Church while singing about Jesus he felt drawn closer to God and this changed his life forever. His mother became his first convert for Christ.

Early life
[edit]Smith Wigglesworth was born on 10 June [1] in Menston, Yorkshire, England, to an impoverished family. As a small child, he worked in the fields pulling turnips alongside his mother; he also worked in factories to help provide for his family. He was illiterate as a child, being unschooled because of his labours.[2]
