Ezra F. Vogel, author of a new biography of Deng Xiaoping, retired from Harvard University in 2000, but still lives just a few hundred yards from the campus. In an interview at his home in Cambridge, Mass., he discussed his book, “Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China”; the differing views of Deng during his rule and now; and the differences between Chinese and American politics during the opening of China to the West.
