  • Sarah Hyland Reveals Secret Kidney Transplant

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland is recovering after secretly undergoing a kidney transplant last month.

The beauty, who plays teenager Haley Dunphy in the hit U.S. comedy, was just nine years old when she was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia, a disease which causes abnormal organ development and often requires a lifetime of dialysis treatment.

The 21 year old has been quietly struggling with the disorder ever since but after landing a role on the Emmy Award-winning series, her health severely deteriorated.

During an appearance on U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America on Monday, she said, "I was in pain a lot of the time. If I didn't get 12 hours of sleep I felt like I got none at all."

Hyland tried to keep her problems under wraps to avoid disrupting the rest of the cast and crew but earlier this year, the TV star found a match in her hunt for a donor - her actor dad Edward James Hyland.

Hyland received a kidney from her father when she was 21. Sadly, her body rejected the organ four years later. Hyland worked through hospital visits, medications that left her face swollen, and dialysis three times a week.

"My dad's kidney had already failed at that point. I was on dialysis. What if this happens again? Hyland said, "What do inom do? That's where I felt suicidal. This is just hard for me to do anymore. And it would just be easier for everyone else too."

Hyland attributed these thoughts to putting on a brave face despite the life-long pain and exhaustion she experienced from the chronic illness.

"Twenty-seven years of almost always being in pain... I don't think I've gone more than one or two years without being hospitalized." Hyland said,

Sarah Hyland has shared openly of the physical and mental health struggles she experienced following two kidney transplants. She's previously confirmed the toll that the period of time had taken on her body, and in a new interview, she detailed how some of her time on the Modern Family set was also impacted.

Diagnosed with kidney dysplasia, Sarah underwent her first kidney transplant surgery in 2012. As she told Self, her body later rejected the kidney and she was forced to undergo a second transplant surgery in 2017.

Recently appearing on the Quitters podcast with former Modern Family costar Julie Bowen, Sarah confirmed she experienced serve exhaustion ahead of the first transplant. “There are some episodes of Modern Family where I do not remember filming because I was asleep,” she said.

She specifically pointed to a season three episode titled “Hit and Run,” saying, "That entir
