I have completed my 7th Challenge and lived to tell the tale, but only just! To my surprise, it was quite the toughest, scariest and in many ways the nastiest thing I have ever done in my life, but hugely satisfying to have achieved it and my admiration for the great British cave explorers who got me through (and who do this sort of thing for fun all the time) is unbounded.
The Titan shaft was closed, having had a cave-in (a reassuring start!) and so we went down the nearby James entré shaft, which is actually 1.5m deeper than Titan at 232m (761 ft.) with 4 pitches, making this the deepest caving through trip in England.
This shaft was sunk 235 years ago in 1780 and only rediscovered in 1996 by our leader on Saturday, the great caver Dave Nixon, known to all as Moose. Titan, which is a natural shaft, was discovered by Moose in 1999.
I have only abseiled once before, 37 years ago, and so I was a bit nervous

Robin Hanbury-Tenison OBE, DL, Dsc, Dhc, MA, FLS, FRGS is an explorer with a conscience. He has spent much of his life travelling in the world's rainforests and deserts and campaigning to protect both them and their people. One of the few remaining explorers who merits the name, he made the two first crossings of South America from East to West (1958) and North to South (1964/5).
